8 Best Beaches in Northern Morocco: Access & Planning Guide
For a beach afternoon from Tetouan, start with Martil. For an Atlantic outing, base yourself in Tangier or Asilah. For several days around Mediterranean bays, consider Al Hoceima. The best northern Morocco beach for your trip depends on your base, transport and the atmosphere you want.
This shortlist covers eight beaches in the far north, from the Tangier–Asilah coast to Al Hoceima. It does not treat distant Moroccan resorts as one convenient day-trip circuit. Use the comparison below to choose a coastal cluster, then plan one beach at a time.
Which Northern Morocco Beach Suits Your Trip?
- No car, staying in Tetouan: investigate Martil first and confirm the local return service.
- Beach and town life: compare Martil and M’diq, where a seaside outing can include a promenade walk and a meal.
- A coastal accommodation base: look at Cabo Negro, checking the actual route from your accommodation to the sand.
- An outing from Tangier: choose between Mediterranean Dalia and Atlantic Achakkar; they are on different sides of the area.
- Asilah plus an Atlantic beach: consider Rmilat, also called Paradise Beach, with return transport arranged.
- Several beach days: base yourself in Al Hoceima for Quemado and an outing to Asfiha.
The Atlantic and Mediterranean labels describe geography, not swimming conditions. Wind, swell and local warnings matter on either coast.
Eight Beaches Compared: Coast, Base and Access
The links below open Google Maps searches for each beach, not a surveyed entrance or guaranteed driving route. Check the selected place, recent access information and your collection point before setting out. With similar place names, search results can be ambiguous.
| Beach | Coast / base | Choose it for | Transport decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Martil | Mediterranean / Tetouan or Martil | A developed beach town and corniche | Confirm the bus or shared-taxi return |
| Cabo Negro | Mediterranean / Tetouan coast | A stay near the beach | Check the precise accommodation-to-beach route |
| M’diq | Mediterranean / M’diq or Tetouan | Beach time with a seafront town | Confirm which local stop serves your entrance |
| Dalia | Mediterranean / Tangier | A separate coastal outing | Arrange a workable return before leaving |
| Achakkar | Atlantic / Tangier | The coast around the Hercules Caves | Price the outward and return journeys together |
| Rmilat / Paradise Beach | Atlantic / Asilah | A beach outing alongside an Asilah stay | Confirm road access and the pickup arrangement |
| Quemado | Mediterranean / Al Hoceima | A bay associated with a city stay | Check the descent and return to your accommodation |
| Asfiha | Mediterranean / Al Hoceima area | A second beach day outside the city centre | Arrange transport for your exact entrance |
1. Martil: A Beach Afternoon from Tetouan
Martil is a Mediterranean seaside town near Tetouan, with a sandy shore and a corniche lined with places to eat and drink. Choose it if you want a beach visit that includes a stroll and a meal, rather than a remote cove. Summer can be busy; a quieter visit and a lively summer evening are different experiences.
For a short visit, keep the plan simple: travel from Tetouan, walk the seafront, choose a beach spot and leave enough time for your return. Our Martil Beach guide explains the bus-route listing, taxi choices and a budget worksheet.
2. Cabo Negro: Plan Around Where You Stay
Cabo Negro sits on the Mediterranean coast between Martil and M’diq. It is an option to investigate if beach access is a priority when choosing accommodation. A listing that says “Cabo Negro” does not establish that you can walk comfortably from the property to your preferred stretch of sand.
Before booking, ask for the actual beach entrance, walking route and any steps or road crossings. If a listing mentions a pool, beach club or parasols, ask which facilities are included in your rate. Compare the total stay cost with a Tetouan base and separate beach trips.
3. M’diq: Beach Time and a Seafront Town
M’diq is a coastal town on the Tetouan side of the Mediterranean. It is a useful alternative to compare with Martil if you want time in town as well as on the sand. The Moroccan National Tourist Office’s Tetouan beach overview describes the wider Tamuda Bay coast and its tourism infrastructure.
For a day visit, choose the entrance and meal stop before deciding where to be dropped off. For an overnight stay, compare proximity to the beach with evening noise, parking and the route to your next destination. Do not assume a resort or marina name refers to the same beach entrance.
4. Dalia: A Coastal Outing from Tangier
Dalia is an option on the Mediterranean side east of Tangier. The official Tangier destination guide includes Dalia among its highlights. It is better planned as its own outing than added casually to an Atlantic beach afternoon.
If travelling without a car, agree on a return arrangement before leaving Tangier. A cheap outward journey is little help if the return is uncertain. Save a named collection point and decide how long you want on the beach before agreeing to a driver’s waiting or return fee.
5. Achakkar: The Atlantic Coast near Tangier
Achakkar, also written Achakar, is on Tangier’s Atlantic side in the wider Hercules Caves area. The official Tangier beach overview describes the coastal setting near the caves. Treat a cave visit and beach time as separate activities when budgeting: transport, attraction admission and optional beach rentals are different expenses.
Start with our Tangier travel guides to plan the city part of your stay. Then decide whether you want a coastal walk, beach time or both. Check current sea conditions before planning to swim on this Atlantic stretch.
6. Rmilat / Paradise Beach: An Asilah Outing
Rmilat near Asilah is commonly called Paradise Beach. It should not be confused with the Rmilat area in Tangier. Epic Travel’s northern beach guide discusses Rmilat as an outing from Asilah and highlights the access planning involved.
Confirm the beach name and municipality with your driver, not just “Rmilat.” Ask whether the vehicle reaches the entrance or leaves you with a walk, and whether the quoted amount includes returning. Avoid relying on an old fixed journey time or a promise that a driver will always wait.
7. Quemado: A Beach Day During an Al Hoceima Stay
Quemado is one of the beaches named in the official Al Hoceima beach guide. Choose an Al Hoceima base if you want to explore this Mediterranean coastal area over several days, rather than make a long detour from a Tangier city break.
Before committing to accommodation, ask how you reach the beach from the property. A nearby map pin does not describe the gradient, steps or effort of the walk back. This matters especially with a pushchair, heavy beach bags or limited mobility. Ask about the actual route rather than treating straight-line distance as walking access.
8. Asfiha: Add a Second Beach Day around Al Hoceima
Asfiha is another beach identified by the Moroccan National Tourist Office in the Al Hoceima area. It makes sense to compare it with Quemado while already staying in the region. Keeping both in one coastal cluster leaves room to change your plan if the weather does not suit a beach day.
Check your exact drop-off and pickup location, available supplies and the return quote. For a short stay, one well-planned outing is usually more useful than collecting several beaches in a rushed day. If driving, confirm the current approach and parking arrangements locally.
Getting There and Planning the Return Journey
Choose the base first, then the entrance. A local bus may serve the town without stopping at your chosen beach; a shared taxi may drop you at a rank rather than the waterfront. Ask where the last part of the journey starts and how you will complete it.
- Save the beach search result and confirm it is in the correct town.
- Ask whether a fare is per passenger, per vehicle, one way or return.
- Confirm the pickup point, the last workable return and a backup.
- With a private driver, agree on waiting time and what happens if your plans change.
- Keep enough money for the return before spending on meals or rentals.
For remote outings, arranging the way back is part of choosing the beach. For urban beaches, confirm the current service locally rather than relying on a timetable copied from an older guide.
A Beach-Day Budget in Moroccan Dirhams
There is no single reliable cost for “a northern Morocco beach day.” A walk from your accommodation, a shared-taxi trip and a private return transfer have different budgets. Keep every quote in MAD (Moroccan dirhams) and separate group costs from per-person costs.
| Budget item | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Outward transport | Your current fare or vehicle quote |
| Return transport | A confirmed return cost, not an assumption |
| Food and water | Your spending allowance per person |
| Optional rentals / parking | Only extras you actually plan to use |
| Contingency | An amount you keep available for changes |
Illustrative arithmetic only: if your chosen figures are MAD 40 for return transport in total, MAD 60 for food and water, MAD 20 for an optional extra and MAD 40 kept aside, your budget is MAD 160. These are example inputs, not researched fares or advertised beach prices. Replace them with your quotes. Accommodation and travel between cities are excluded.
For a wider trip, use the RoamMorocco trip budget planner. If a car quote is shared by several people, divide only the shared vehicle cost; add each person’s meals and other expenses separately.
When to Go: Summer Crowds and Quieter Visits
July and August can bring a lively holiday atmosphere to established northern beach towns. If your priority is space rather than nightlife, investigate June or September and weekdays rather than summer weekends. Quieter months are an option for a promenade walk or coastal stay, but do not assume all summer facilities remain open.
Choose dates for the kind of visit you want, then check the short-term forecast. A seasonal recommendation cannot predict a particular day’s wind, visibility or sea conditions. On arrival, follow local beach warnings and ask about current supervised swimming areas. Neither a beautiful photograph nor a Mediterranean location establishes safe swimming.
One-Day and Multi-Day Coastal Plans
- One day from Tetouan: choose Martil for a beach-and-corniche afternoon, or investigate Cabo Negro or M’diq instead. Leave time for the city and return journey.
- One day from Tangier: choose Achakkar on the Atlantic side or Dalia on the Mediterranean side. Price transport before adding another stop.
- A stay in Asilah: keep one day for town time and another for Rmilat if access and weather suit.
- A stay in Al Hoceima: compare Quemado and Asfiha over separate days, with flexibility for conditions.
If your trip also includes inland northern Morocco, browse our Chefchaouen guides. Plan it as a separate stay or travel leg. Check road travel before combining it with a beach base.
What to Pack and Check Before Leaving
Pack water, sun cream, a hat, a towel, a charged phone and a bag for your rubbish. Save the pickup details offline. If you need toilets, shade, changing facilities or step-free access, ask about those specific facilities at your chosen entrance before going. “Family-friendly” in a listing does not answer every practical question.
Confirm optional rental charges before using equipment, keep valuables with you and leave the beach as you found it. A simple plan with supplies and a confirmed return is more useful than an ambitious list of stops.
Northern Morocco Beaches: Frequently Asked Questions
Are northern Morocco beaches on the Atlantic or Mediterranean?
Both. In this shortlist, Achakkar and Rmilat near Asilah are Atlantic choices. Martil, Cabo Negro, M’diq, Dalia, Quemado and Asfiha are Mediterranean choices.
Which beach should I investigate without a car from Tetouan?
Start with Martil. Check the current local bus or shared-taxi option, the drop-off point and return service. Read our detailed Martil transport guide before choosing your journey.
Can I visit all eight beaches in a day?
These beaches belong to different coastal clusters. Choose one cluster for a short stay; allow separate travel and beach days if combining Tangier, Asilah, Tetouan and Al Hoceima.
Is a quieter beach always a better choice?
No. Less development can mean fewer services and a harder return journey. Choose according to your transport, supplies and preferences, then check current conditions.
